What is Humalite you might ask?
It is a naturally occurring carbon rich soil amendment which, before processing, is a by-product derived from fresh water deposits of Alberta sub-bituminous coal. It helps to stimulate the soil’s microbiology and enhance the plant’s uptake of nutrients. It acts as a soil conditioner and promotes the growth of beneficial fungi which in turn aids with water retention.
Why Humalite:
Many people ask us if they should amend their soil with anything when digging the holes for the plants they have purchased from us.
Some native plants have specific soil preferences such as ones containing high levels of organic matter for example. The majority however and quite adaptable to a variety of soils. Unless the site conditions are very poor or it is difficult to gather enough native soil to back fill the planting holes, we suggest planting the plants in your site’s native soil. Over time, when the roots extend out from that planting zone, they won’t have to go through a large adjustment to their new environment. One thing that we do recommend however is to add a bit of beneficial granular Humalite to the planting hole.
Application Instructions:
A two gallon plant will require about 1 cup of Humalite applied during the planting process.
We sell 1 kilogram bags of Humalite which should be a sufficient quantity for planting 6 x 2 gallon woody plants.
