A rare oak species in the landscape trade. The black oak is an important part of the oak savanna ecosystem found in the southern Ontario natural landscape. One key feature for survival in this habitat is it's ability to tolerate low-intensity grass fires that are customary in the summer months.
Has a fast rate of growth for a member of the oak (Quercus) family. Has the ability to thrive in dry, sandy, poor soil conditions. Prefers medium, well-drained soil in full sun. Excellent as a shade or street tree.
Deep-green leaves and a furrowed grayish/black bark. In the fall it displays gorgeous shades of yellows and browns.
Supports many species of butterflies and moths.
