Product Details
The American cranberrybush (Viburnum opulus var. americanum), also known as highbush cranberry, is a native North American shrub celebrated for its ornamental beauty and ecological contributions throughout the year. In spring, it showcases flat-topped clusters of white flowers, which attract a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies. As summer progresses, these blooms give way to bright red berries that persist into winter, providing a valuable food source for birds and other wildlife. The shrub's maple-like leaves turn vibrant shades of red and purple in the fall, adding seasonal interest to gardens and landscapes. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the American cranberrybush serves as a host plant for butterfly and moth larvae, such as the Spring Azure (Celastrina ladon), supporting local biodiversity. Adaptable to various soil types and moisture conditions, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and is suitable for use in hedges, screens, or as a specimen plant. Importantly, this native species is preferred over the similar European cranberrybush (Viburnum opulus var. opulus), which has become invasive in some regions, outcompeting native vegetation and disrupting local ecosystems. By choosing the American cranberrybush, gardeners can enjoy year-round beauty while supporting native wildlife and maintaining ecological balance.
