Quercus bicolor - Swamp White Oak
A strong, durable tree with an attractive rounded form. Bright shades of yellow, orange and purple are displayed in autumn. Often used as an effective shade tree for landscape applications. Supports many species of butterflies and moths.
Adaptable to various conditions, it has a preference for poorly drained bottomlands with acidic soil. Having a two-tiered root system it can thrive in a spectrum of conditions by using the upper layer in wet moments and the deeper layer during dry spells.
The specific epithet bicolor has been given for the two-tone nature of the leaves, having an upperside with a shiny, dark green appearance and the underside being a whitish-green with a velvety feel.
