Magnolia acuminata - Cucumber Magnolia
A majestic deciduous tree native to eastern North America, including parts of southern Ontario. Renowned for its cold hardiness, it stands as one of the largest magnolia species, typically reaching heights of 60 to 80 feet with a pyramidal crown and a straight trunk. In late spring to early summer, it produces subtle, tulip-shaped, greenish-yellow flowers that, while not as conspicuous as those of other magnolias, add a delicate charm to the tree . These blossoms give way to distinctive, cucumber-like fruits that mature to a striking red in late summer, releasing bright red seeds that attract birds and small mammals . The large, ovate leaves provide dense shade during the growing season and transition to a yellowish hue in the fall, offering seasonal interest . Magnolia acuminata thrives in moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soils and prefers full sun to partial shade. Its substantial size and graceful form make it an excellent choice for front lawns, large gardens, and naturalized landscapes.
