A large perennial that is long-lived in optimal growing conditions. Stunning, pinkish plumes adorn the foliage in midsummer. Large, deeply-cut leaves are a showy feature. Prefers moist to wet soil conditions and is somewhat intolerant of drought. Spreads via rhizome and has a semi-aggressive nature in rich, moist soil.
