A medium sized tree with a rounded form. Attractive shiny, reddish-brown bark in youth turning to a greyish color as it matures. Tolerates wet sites. Resistant to the bronze birch borer pest. Prefers evenly moist, acidic, well-drained soil. Will survive in clay soils or shallow, rocky areas. Intolerant of urban conditions or heavily compacted soils.
