An ideal maple species for moist areas. Naturally found along streams and lakes. Drought and salt tolerant. Leaves have pronounced, deep cuts with a five-lobed shape. Growing season foliage is green on top and silvery-white on the underside giving the appearance of "shimmering" in the breeze. Fall color is often a pale yellow or brownish hue.
The silver maple has a fast growth rate which is a positive attribute when used in the right landscaping setting. Excellent for naturalization, screening, hedgerows and riparian areas. The downside of being quick to grow is that the silver maple is known to be less durable than other slow growing maple species.
