Saskatoon Serviceberry

Amelanchier alinfolia

This is a great shrub for borders, woodland gardens and used in masses. Provides four season interest and edible fruit. The berries are small and sweet with a deep blue coloration, similar to blueberries, and can be used for jams and pies. Wildlife is attracted to the berries. Sports white flowers in the spring.

Height : 5-25 feet

Spread : 1-25 feet

Light : Full sun to part shade

Water : Dry to moist

Soil : Sand, loam, clay

Zone : 3-9

Leaves : Smooth dark green with lighter undersides. Fall brilliant red and yellows

Stem : Smooth with dark-grey coloration

Flower : White with delicate petals displayed in June

Fruit : Edible, deep blue/purple berries produced in July-August

Habit : Small-medium sized shrub with spreading stolons to form small colonies
