Wild Black Currant

Ribes americanum

This densely branched shrub has a spreading form making it great for hedges and screening. Produces small, round berries that are dark purple in coloration. They are edible and are often used for jams, jellies and wine-making. Attracts pollinators. Do not plant near white pine as it carries a rust that affects these trees.

Light : Full sun to part shade

Water : Moist

Soil : Sand, loam, clay

Zone : 2-8

Leaves : Medium green foliage throughout entire season. Hairy on leaf underside

Stem : Twigs are pale brown with golden colored lenticels. Older stems develop ridges from leaf scars

Flower : Bright pale yellowish-white flowers on display in early spring

Fruit : Small, dark-purple berry hangs in chain-like clusters along stems. Edible

Habit : Low-medium sized shrub with upright, spreading form
