Eastern Redbud

Cercis canadensis

A spectacular spring bloomer with vibrant, showy pink flowers that are held tightly to it’s branches. Attractive heart-shaped leaves are sported spring to fall. Prefers moist conditions with some shade. In our area it is recommended to plant in a spot with some protection from the wind. Highly tolerant of urban conditions. Attracts pollinators.

Spread : 3-6 feet

Light : Full sun to part shade

Water : Medium to moist

Soil : Sand, loam, clay

Zone : 5-9

Leaves : Newly emerging leaves in spring have a reddish tinge turning glossy green throughout the summer

Stem : Slender brown stems

Flower : Clusters of small showy flowers in May

Fruit : During summer flowers turn to flattened brown seedpods which persist into the fall and sometimes the winter

Habit : Deciduous multi-stemmed upright spreading shrub. Suckers will form thickets
