American Hazel

Corylus americana

Produces a highly prized filberts often referred to as hazelnuts. Excellent for use in various baking and sweet treats. Does well in full sun to part shade in well-drained soil. Attracts small mammals and birds which eat the filberts ‘hazelnuts’ in the fall. Drought and urban condition tolerant

Height : 4-15 feet

Spread : 4-10 feet

Light : Full sun to shade

Water : Dry to moist

Soil : Loam

Zone : 4-8

Leaves : Medium green leaves with double-tooted edges. Hairy leaf undersides

Stem : Smooth gray bark which becomes more rough with age. Young twigs are brown and covered with reddish-brown hairs

Flower : Male flowers appear in the form of small catkins in fall and pollinate tiny, red female flowers that open in mid spring

Fruit : Edible, egg-shaped brown nuts (1/2” diameter) ripening in late summer

Habit : A medium sized, suckering shrub that will often form thickets
